Over the last few weeks my time has been redirected, that is to say my mind has been turned away from the more pc based music creation software to hardware.
An old QY10 that I ‘found’ dragged up old memories of Roland 303′s and Yamaha RM1x’s.
It was while I was looking for at 303′s on yout tube that my slothlike memory pulled out a fractured memory of a peice of software that I’d forgotten about.
In 1997 about the time I first touched a PC, the software, Propellerheads, the company that now brings you ‘Reason’ and ‘Record’ – released ‘RebirthRB 338′ an emulation of the Roland 303.
Now the good news, it’s ‘free’.
How cool is that?
You’ll need to register with The Rebirth Museum
Then you’ll have to download an .ISO image and burn that to CD.
It’s a bit of a rigmarole but you need the cd in order for the software to work.
The software also takes a little getting used to.
I’m not going to write a tutorial just yet. I’m trying to figure out how to use the rewire function.
Problems with vista also – this was fixed by installing as normal then copying the demo file to the desktop and opening that instead.
Navigate to your propellerhead folder and find Rebirth copy the demo song file and paste it on your desktop.
How close the emulation is to the Roland 303 is not my main interest with this software.
I’m a hardware geek so that little monkey will have to be indulged with a visit to Fleabay.
That said ‘Rebirth’ is cool once you get your head into it. Throw some headphones on and get programming.
I’ll be throwing a few tutorials up on how to get the most from this very cool piece of software.

Found this compression plugin at Jeroen Breebaart’s free plugins, PC-2 Pschoacoustic compressor v1.0.1
‘Conventional compressors are based on peak or rms-level estimation to compute their time-variant gain or attenuation. This property of most compressors often causes undesirable intermodulation distortion and pumping/breathing artefacts.
PC-2 features a ‘psycho-acoustic relevance’ mode. Instead of using a peak or rms-level estimation, this mode employes a perceptual loudness model to compute the loudness of the input signal. This perceptual loudness model is combined with advanced attack and release stages that model peripheral adaptation of the human auditory nerve. The result is a very transparent compression characteristic, even with very short attack and release times.
On the other hand, the simple, classic compression behavior can be engaged too by simply switching off the complex loudness model.’

Stardust is a free VST plug-in that is designed for channel processing as well as mastering. Audio is processed at 5 stages :
Bass Enhancer
Bass frequencies are enhanced around the selected frequency, with Q and gain control, then rotated in a 200Hz selectable pole rotator (0-off to 8 poles).
Treble Enhancer
Treble frequencies are enhanced around the selected frequency, with Q and gain control, then rotated in a 10 kHz selectable pole rotator (0-off to 8 poles).
Stereo Enhancer
The stereo image is enhanced and applied with the specified delay.
Multi-Band Compressor
8-Band Multi-Band compression is applied to audio, global compression parameters can be specified.
Wideband Compressor
Analog-like wideband compressor.
Detailed Monitoring

Input/Output and Precision
Stardust is a VST2 plug-in that has 1 32-bit input pair and 1 32-bit output pair. Internal calculation precision is 64-bit. Stardust can handle rates up to 192 kHz.

Excellent vst compressor plugin offered for free from smartelelectronix,
‘A simple and effective compressor with classic controls auto gain compensation and preamp to overdrive it.’
‘there’s a side-chain version for vst win32 too here with 3 inlets, the third one being the side-chain. Not all host will accept to load it because of this. However any decent modular host should do the job, and I think it’s also possible in more classical hosts using routing to effect capacities.’
Possibly not the ultimate list of the best free VST equalizer plugins but hopefully as it get’s updated it will get close.

Needs a bit of work to understand, works in a similar way to the Pultec.

The Linear Phase Graphic EQ 2 by Slim Slow Slider is a free VST plugin comes in two different flavours but actually seem to be the same effect, maybe I’m missing something?
Anyway the controls are quite simple the frequency adjustment in the graphic equalizer stage itself are adjusted by a simple drag using the mouse.
I really like the dragging control for some reason,whilst you adjust as you click on the ‘screen’ the freq and gain amount are shown below.

This is a really nifty equalizer vst plugin that seems to have quite a small CPU load.
How it compares with other VST eqs is up to your ears really.

NyquistEq – Free EQ Vst Plugin Effect is part of Magnus’s plugin range available to download at Smartelectronix
You’ll need to scroll down Marcus’s page there to find it.
Parametric graphic equalizer with excellent response all the way up to Nyquist. It never clicks, and it handles deep bass well too. The Nyquist frequency is the highest representable frequency for a given sample rate. The trebliest of the treble. Most other digital eqs have great problems producing a natural sound here.
