Below is a test of the Behringer Vintage Distortion – The VD-1.

I really like this cheapo pedal, it looks like a brick and sounds like a ton of bricks.

If you’re looking for a cool budget distortion then this in my humble opinion is it.

It’s very light when handled.

Bit of blurb below,

Behringer Vintage Distortion

Vintage Distortion at your feet—from screaming loud to whisper soft!

Here’s an authentic, classic distortion effect—the warm and emotive tone that has ruled rock for the last 30 years. With the dedicated Sustain control, your guitar will learn how to scream! You get a status LED for effect On/Off and battery check, and there is a true hard-wire bypass for ultimate in signal integrity. The VD1 runs on a 9 V battery or a DC power supply (not included).

The VD1 Vintage Distortion is an excellent and affordable alternative to the Electro Harmonix big muff, providing a meaty, dirty fuzz like in the good old days. Versatile, dirty and great value-for-money!

First Audio is a recording with Sustain cranked to full as seen in above image.

One of my all time favourite effects is the Tremelo effect, it’s very cool.

A few months I decided to dispense with my trusty Behringer guitar rack unit and get back into seperates.

The benefits are better control, less reliance on presets – hell it’s fun as well as getting some awesome sounds.

My favourite pedals have always been Electro Harmonix – they just sound so good.

Anyway this audio review is of the EHX Pulsar Variable Shape Analog Tremolo.

‘The Stereo Pulsar generates vintage tremolo and panning that will fill any venue with rhythmic stereo energy. Its Wave Form switch allows you to change the modulation from triangle to square form. The Wave Shape control allows you to control transitions from negative to positive saw tooth or adjust pulse width. This all means you can create any type of stereo tremolo from pure vintage to ones never heard before.’

Recordings have been made in the same recording scenario as previous recordings.

Fender Champion 600 Amp, Fender Telecaster fitted with Seymour Duncan bridge pickup.

Mic placement as pictured below,

Volume settings as below,

Amp placed on Stool at a height of between 9 and 12 inches from the floor – stool is in the middle of the room and the room is open plan.

Mic’s are Shure sm57 and sm58.

We’ve recorded a selection of settings to give an idea of how the pedal soounds.

To boost the signal a little we used it with the double muff pedal on single muff setting.

Each example will be preceded with a photo of the pedals settings.

Boss GT-8 selection of Distortions and Overdrives and a big white monkey 5 watt Chimp amp.

Below are recordings of some of the more famous effects.

Basically mic’d up the Chimp as pictured below,

Volume set at,

Fender Telecaster fitted with Seymour Duncan bridge pickup,

(Amp shown in picture below is Fender Champion 600)

Again because the Boss GT-8 has a ridiculous amount of effects we decided to record just a selection of what we could without messing with the settings.

We used no reverb, compression or delay just Distortion or Overdrive.

The playing on these records veers from sensible to half arsed clownshoes style stunt guitar.

Please engage your sense of humour when listening.

A few weeks ago my old band mate and best man came around with his spanking new aquisition.

A big white monkey 5 watt Chimp – Link

It is of course an valve amp and not an electrified furry beast looking for tarzan.

Anyway a couple of days we decided to get the thing set up and recorded much in the same way I recorded my Fender Champion a day earlier.

From their website:

‘We started off modifying guitar amps as a project—trying to get the sound and feel we wanted from amps already out there. The Fenders, Epi’s and others gave a great sound, but just didn’t have what we were looking for. So we went back to the drawing board and designed our own. We came up with mods you won’t find on any other amp, which help get the tone and sound we wanted. ‘

Getting any info on the Chimp is quite difficult to be honest – there’s plenty of it there on the website but it’s all very technical and a guitar smacker like myself can’t be arsed reading, I want to hear the bugger.

So that’s what we did and we recorded it for reference.

Equipment list:

Fender Telecaster(mexican) with single coil seymour duncan bridge pickup.

Shure sm57 and sm58.

Planet Waves guitar leads.

Electro Harmonix double muff.

Behringer Xenyx 1622FX mixing desk.

Let’s get started…

Amp settings below,

Mic placement as in the three images below,

From the pictures above you’ll see that the amp has been placed on a cusioned stool about 9-12 inches from the floor.

Two dynamic mics have been placed directly in front on the cone.

These are a sm57 and a sm58 as stated earlier.

Each recording has been recorded in three states with three different pickup selections.

Clean, Single Muff and double muff – for each variant Guitar Toggle Down, Middle then Up.

Tones and Volumes on guitar are on full.

Warning you may hear some jibba jabba as this recording setup had two people involved.

Chris is playing on these recordings.

Recording 1: Open Chords

Recording 2: Palm Muting and Power Chords

Recording 3: Lead

Recording 4: Funk

Hope you likey.

A while back I was reading one of my favourite books on recording, ‘The Recording Engineers Handbook‘ by Bobby Owsinski when I came across a trick I promised myself I would try.

The trick itself itself was to tune an acoustic to the key of the song your recording, place said acoustic next to amp then place a mic near the body facing the soundhole.

This trick was designed for a clean guitar sound and is supposed to have the effect of creating a tuned reverb chamber.

So today a friend and I decided to give the trick a go.

We used my Mexican Fender Telecaster and set up my Fender Champion 600 as below.

Mics used in above picture are a sm57 and a sm58.

Set amp volume to middle and set Electro Harmonix double muff (single muff)

First recording we did was micing the strings and body. We used a Takstar PCM 6100 – cheapo condenser mic that is worth much more than the £4 I paid for it on fleabay.

The second recording we did was by placing the mic over the F hole as pictured below.

Each time we recorded we split the recording onto two tracks.

In each case Track 1 we have the ‘tuned reverb’ and Track 2 we have our main track.

To boost(exaggerate) the reverb I then placed a compressor on the the ‘reverb’ track.

So first recording: Mic on the strings ->

no reverb

with reverb

Second recording: Mic on the F hole ->

no reverb

with reverb

The resonator is a Harley Benton HBN100 that I was bought. It came from Thomann and for £200 it’s well worth it.

Apart from the compression applied to the first track there has been no other processing applied.

Best to listen with headphones or dedicated speakers.
