Nirvana ‘dismayed’ at Cobain game
‘Former Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl have said they are “dismayed and very disappointed” at how Kurt Cobain is used in a video game.
They do not agree that the band’s late frontman can be used to play songs by other artists in the new Guitar Hero.
In a joint statement, they said they “didn’t know” Cobain’s character in the game could be used to play any kind of song the player wants.
Game makers Activision said permission had been granted by Cobain’s estate.’ – Read the rest here
A few days ago I stuck up for ‘Rock Star’ saying that it’s influence on young kids getting into music was a good thing.
But ‘Guitar Heroes’ idea of having Kurt Cobain as an unlockable character seems to be far beyond the pale.
I’m not at all offay with the ins and outs of the game to be honest but can you do the same with Hendrix? Is he even in the game.
Anyway moot point really because apparently the Nirvana estate signed off on it.
Not as bad as selling his diaries but a bit off all the same.
And really can’t blame Activision for asking if they could do it, (although common decency should have informed them not too).
Leaves a bad taste in the mouth really.
Maybe I’m just being over sensitive to it. Kurt Cobain was someone I admired and had a lot of respect for even if I disagreed with some aspects of his life.
Maybe I should lighten up after all it’s just a game…
Musicians hit out at piracy plans
‘An alliance of music stars, songwriters and record producers has spoken out against UK government proposals to kick file-sharers off the internet.
Persistent file-sharers could have their internet accounts suspended in an attempt to crack down on piracy.
But Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien, a member of the Featured Artists’ Coalition (FAC), said: “It’s going to start a war which they’ll never win.”‘ – Read the rest here
I’m very pro piracy, as long as it’s the right people doing it for the right reasons.
Go back to when you was a kid, when I was a kid it was common place to tape your friends records or your own and share them around.
You couldn’t always get access to the music you wanted to hear on the radio, and why should you pay out for something you potentially might not like?
You wouldn’t buy a suit without trying it on first would you?
I remember having a small microphone attached to one of those flat mono tape decks, I would record of the radio and sometimes I would hold it to the speaker on my Fidelity record player.
Horrid, horrible recordings, but they served a purpose – my tastes developed.
From a very young age I was obsessively into music but like most pre teenage and teenage kids I just didn’t have the money to afford all the records I wanted, I was never a glutton but yes I did involve myself in piracy.
As I got older and had more cash I spent on the records I could afford. And still do.
These days MP3s serve as nothing more than hard drive nuggets, they’re ok for creating compilations but nothing compares to having the CDs sitting in order on my many shelves of music.
I believe that kids use the internet and torrent sites to do eexactly what myself and millions of other kids did.
If it creates music lovers who end up spending there hard earned cash on concerts, festivals, merchandise, CDs and DVDs then where is the harm.
I understand there are a select few who try and profit from this kind of thing but they should be dealt with in the criminal courts as criminals.
But again I ask, who buys it anyway?
The truth is a lot of people download music illegally, it’s huge and it’s a war that cannot be won.
Making examples of true music lovers will only alienate the music industry further.
Rock stars cool over video games
‘Former Rolling Stones star Bill Wyman has expressed concern that music games like Rock Band stop young people from practising real musical instruments.
He told the BBC: “It encourages kids not to learn, that’s the trouble.
“It makes less and less people dedicated to really get down and learn an instrument. I think is a pity so I’m not really keen on that kind of stuff.”‘ – Read the rest here
As a musician and guitarist I’ve never liked these kind of games, I find them a waste of time and energy. But I’m like that with all games really. I have a PS2 which lives in a drawer, I love the survival horror games and I worked in a Playstation shop – but given the choice I’d leave them well alone.
As a teacher of guitar and bass I’ve found games to be the distraction that kids do not need. They eat into practice time for both kids and adults.
But again as a teacher I’ll be honest they work for me in a weird way.
Kids don’t see the two as the same thing, kids are much more aware that Mr Wyman gives them credit for.
When ‘School oF Rock’ first came out I got lots of enquiries regarding lessons.
Now I get a lot of kids coming through who have been turned onto guitar because of Guitar Hero and Rock Star not in spite of them.
Furthermore I’ve actually got students who under normal circumstances would not have heard of Foghat, AC/DC. Black Sabbath and Guns n Roses coming into lessons asking to learn songs by those artists because of the game.
As much as I want to agree, I just can’t.
I still think they’re rubbish but in a snobbish way that I can’t shake off.
And that is my malfunction and not the games.
Anything that promotes music IS a good thing.
Michael Jackson was a prophet…
Sorry meant Michael Jackson turning a profit.
Bleedin predictive text!!!
Seems that death gets you a get out of jail free card these days, musically speaking that is.
Michael Jackson guilty or not of what he was accused of, suffered financially from the rumours of his pecadillos.
Now I have no idea if he was guilty or not, but neither am I 100% sure that Gary Glitter was guilty and just writing that makes me feel queasy.
It’s funny though that Michael Jackson can be given a reprieve in death, all is forgiven Michael because at the end of the day Billie Jean is just a superior song to Rock n Roll Part 2.
It’s a nonsense is it not?
It’s creepy really, people have been in mourning and HMV have been rubbing their grubby little hands.
I say let’s kill Jonathon King and see how much money he makes.
Oh sorry I forgot, talent IS the byline here.
‘Entertainment group Chrysalis says its trading in the three months to June 30 saw an “extraordinary surge” in sales of Michael Jackson’s recorded music.
Chrysalis publishes a number of the late singer’s hits, including Thriller, Rock With You and Off the Wall, all written by Rod Temperton.
Millions of Jackson’s albums and singles have been sold worldwide since his death on 25 June.
The firm said its overall financial performance was in line with forecasts.’ -
Napster once a pirate now just a con artist
A few years ago I bought a Samsung YH920 mp3 player – it’s 20gb and works pretty good.
Filled it pretty much straight away and added music every so often. Last time was about 6 months ago?
Anyway this morning went to add some more tunes to it and napster wants to update itself, ok fair enough.
Update finishes and now I can’t add music to my MP3 player, worse still Napster are now asking me to pay for the right to add music to ‘my’ mp3 player. Music that I paid for on CD.
What’s when I tried to use other software it craps on my database so nothing is there now.
What a joke, pirates all suited and booted and playing by new rules.
Arseholes of the lowest order.
And Samsung are no better for being in cahoots with them.
I hope a real rain comes and washes them all away.
Arggghhhhhh
